Marble is a popular limestone used in homes and businesses alike. Often used in kitchen and baths, marble requires regular maintenance to keep it looking like new. Of all the natural stones Marble is the softest which also means repairs come quite frequently if the stone is used in a heavily trafficked area.
Granite is a natural stone with a medium hardness rating. Although it is harder than marble, granite can still be stained and needs regular maintenance in order to protect your investment and keep the stone looking fresh.
Terrazzo is made up of a composite mixture that is poured into place and is commonly used as flooring or wall treatments. The chips in the mixture can be made up of granite, marble, or quartz among other materials. Because terrazzo is often used as flooring, it can become chipped over time and can require refinishing.
Travertine is a white or light colored natural stone commonly called “swiss-cheese marble” because of the many holes it contains. Although it provides a durable surface for flooring and wall tiles, travertine can become damaged or chipped due to the many holes its contains naturally. Repairs can be done to travertine floors and tiles using filler and should be maintained or polished regularly.
Quartzite is similar in hardness to granite. It is becoming increasingly popular to use as kitchen counters because of its hardness and durability. Quartz is made up of 60-70% natural stone and 30-40% composite. It looks a lot like marble but is harder and more durable. Because of the nature of the stone mixture, often repairs must be made over the lifetime of the surface.
